Founded in 2012 by Maximilian Bittner and backed by a German incubator company called Rocket Internet, Lazada entered the Southeast Asian market with the intention of establishing a business model similar to Amazon. For the first two years, the company sourced funding from major investors like JPMorgan Chase, Tesco, and Summit Partners, before launching in Singapore in 2014. While this proved to be a good move, the company originally faced losses as much as their revenues. Its turning point came when the Alibaba Group acquired a controlling interest, subsequently turning the platform around through investments and leveraging their strengths.

One needs to simply send over the products in a bulk shipment, and then everything from shipping, returns, and other logistics will be handled by Lazada. To make things even easier, you can manage multiple Lazada stores located in different countries from a single account from their online Seller Center.


What’s better is that signing up on Lazada is totally free! There are no setup or monthly fees involved. The only fees you need to pay for are the payment or transaction fees for Lazada, which is at 2%. Cross-border sales, on the other hand, get charged a Commission Fee between 1% and 4%, depending on where you’re selling from. Taxes (Government Service Tax or Value Added Tax) depend on your country, but in the Philippines this is at 10% of the overall purchase. 


You can also sell a wide variety of items on the e-commerce platform, such as jewelry, clothes, and even some food items. The only thing you need to note are the prohibited items that you can’t sell on the platform, such as:

How do I set up a store on Lazada?

Setting up and getting started with a store on Lazada can be done quickly and easily. Just follow these steps.
1.   Head to Lazada’s Seller Center , then create an account by clicking on Become a Seller at the bottom of the sign in prompt.
2.   From there, you’ll be taken to a page that will prompt you to choose what type of seller you’ll be.
  • Lazmall Sellers - This is best for brand owners or authorized distributors of leading brands that are from the country, and top-rated online brands. 
  • Local Sellers - This option is best for small businesses who are just starting out or a looking for a new online platform to bring their business to.
  • LazGlobal Sellers - This is for those who are based in other countries, such as China, Korea, or Japan. 
3.   We’ll be moving forward with the Local Seller option here. Simply fill in the details requiring your account type, which country your shop is based in, your mobile number, your password, email, and finally, your shop name. Please note that verification of your identity will be required, and that you need to be at least 18 years old if you would like to apply. After this, simply click Sign Up.
4.   After successfully filling out the forms, it will be sent for approval. If approved, you should be sent an email confirmation where you can activate your seller account. In the meantime, you’ll be redirected to your Seller Center Profile page. There are 3 important pages you need to fill in details for: Business Information, Bank Account, and Warehouse Address. Add the necessary details.
5.   Once you receive an email confirmation, verify your account and you’re done!

How do I list products for my Lazada store?

List products in Lazada with Lokal
If you’re done setting up your store, listing your products is the next thing to do.
1.   Go to your Seller Center, locate Products on the side tab, and click on Add Products.
2.   From there you’ll be asked to fill in the information about your product. There are four parts to this: the Basic Information, Detailed Description, Price and Stock, and finally, Service and Delivery. Additionally, you may have noticed the Content Score below the bottom of the page. This is a feature that will guide you to improve upon your product’s description, which can impact your search and sales.
3.   Fill in the necessary details of your product and hit Submit.

Here are some frequently asked questions about Lazada stores that you may find yourself asking.

  • When do I receive my payment from Lazada?

    Sellers are paid 5 business days after the last date in their account statement, which is given every week. For instance, if your latest account statement is from the 3rd of May to the 9th, you’ll get paid on the 11th of May.

  • How does Lazada work when it comes to payments?

    Lazada has plenty of options when it comes to payments, namely: credit and debit cards, Lazada e-wallet, and the ever-popular Cash on Delivery (COD). There are also country-specific options:

    • Philippines - GCash, BDO Credit Card installments
    • Thailand - Counter service (pay at the store): Tesco Lotus Counter Service, Big C Supercenter, Family Mart, mPay Station by AIS, Pay@Post by Thailand Post
    • Singapore - Paypal/AMEX, payment installments
    • Malaysia - Online banking, payment installments

  • How does Cash on Delivery (COD) work?

    Offering Cash on Delivery (COD) is vital as 55% of buyers in Southeast Asia use COD on Lazada, with stores who have this option seeing 1.5 to 3.5 times higher sales on average. Fortunately for those selling in the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam, COD options are automatically enabled. It’s still being discussed whether this will be automatically enabled for Singapore. 


    There are also no extra charges for COD options.

  • How do I connect my bank account to my seller profile?

    Easy! Just head on over to your Seller Profile from the Seller Center and click on Bank Account then fill out the necessary details.
